Fano, the sea turtle bag inspired by Réunion Island's lagoons

The Fano bag pays tribute to the sea turtles of Réunion's lagoons: its design, its four sizes from XL tote to pouch, and our ideas for carrying it.

Seen from behind, a woman in a black top holds a Fano tote illustrated with a sea turtle in red and turquoise tones, facing the ocean under a blue sky

The Fano bag is Tropical Factory’s sea turtle bag: a large turtle in red, ochre and turquoise tones, inspired by the turtles that swim in the crystal-clear waters of Réunion Island’s lagoons. Made from recycled plastic bottles, it comes as an XL, L and S tote and as a pouch.

Here is the story behind the design and how to choose your size.

Why the sea turtle?

The Fano design pays tribute to sea turtles, symbols of wisdom and serenity. Coming across one during a trip to the lagoon is one of those moments you never forget.

The pattern tries to convey that calm: soft colours that blend into each other like a watercolour, and a turtle that seems to glide across the bag. The words 'Reunion Island' are handwritten at the bottom.

It is also a design that reminds us why we make our bags from recycled plastic bottles: less waste also means better-protected oceans.

Fano bag sizes

According to the Fano product page, at the time of writing:

| Size | Price | Best for |

|---|---|---|

| XL classic | €29 | Beach, shopping, everyday bag |

| L classic | €24 | Top-up shopping, a day out |

| S classic | €20 | A trip into town, small errands |

| Classic pouch | €14 | Small items, beach kit |

Fano is one of three designs offered in all three classic tote sizes, XL, L and S, along with Ravenala and Tropical. So it is a good choice if you want to match several bags, for yourself and your loved ones, or keep the same design for the beach and for town.

Which size should you choose?

  • For the beach: the XL, big enough for a towel, sunscreen and a snorkelling mask. Our tips are in our post on beach totes.
  • For the weekly shop: the XL.
  • For small errands or a quick market run: the L.
  • For town: the S.
  • For the essentials: the pouch, to slip into any of the three.

How to carry the Fano bag

  • By the lagoon: the XL on your shoulder, the pouch for phone and keys.
  • In town: the S with a light outfit.
  • Travelling: the L as a spare bag, the pouch for toiletries.
  • As a pair: a tote and a matching pouch make a complete gift.

The other ocean designs in the range

If you love the ocean, other designs draw on the island’s underwater world:

  • Baliste pays tribute to the triggerfish, which lives on the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean, as an XL classic and XL insulated bag;
  • Picasso celebrates the Picasso triggerfish and the island’s reefs, as an XL classic;
  • Nguzi features the tiger shark, as an XL insulated bag and pouch;
  • Kori draws on the cowrie, the shell of tropical shores.

All the totes are in the Classic bags range.

Fano, Baliste or Picasso: which one?

Each of the three ocean designs in the range has its own character:

| Design | What it shows | Sizes listed |

|---|---|---|

| Fano | A sea turtle, in red and turquoise tones | XL, L, S classic and pouch |

| Baliste | The reef triggerfish | XL classic and XL insulated |

| Picasso | The Picasso triggerfish, in turquoise tones | XL classic |

Fano offers the most classic sizes. Baliste is the only one of the three available as an insulated bag. Picasso goes all in on one large tote in lagoon colours.

A gift idea at every price

Caring for your Fano bag

To keep the watercolour colours looking their best:

  • empty and shake out the bag after the beach;
  • wipe the inside with a damp cloth to remove salt;
  • clean stains by hand with mild soap;
  • let it dry open, in the shade.
