How to care for a reusable bag so it lasts
Sand, stains, smells, insulated bags: our gentle, simple tips to clean and care for a reusable bag and keep it looking good for a long time.
By Tropical Factory4 min read

To care for a reusable bag, the most effective method is also the simplest: empty it and shake it out after each use, clean stains by hand with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then let it air-dry in the shade. A bag looked after this way keeps its colours and lasts a long time.
Here are our tips, use by use.
First, one precaution
The product pages in the shop do not give machine-washing instructions. That is why we recommend the gentle methods described here. If you are unsure or have a stubborn stain, write to us through the Customer service page before trying anything harsher.
Good habits after every use
- Empty the bag completely: receipts, crumbs, wrappers, sand.
- Turn it inside out and shake it, preferably outdoors.
- Leave it open for a few hours if it has been closed for a long time, so it can air.
- Put it away dry, never damp.
These habits take a minute and prevent most problems.
Cleaning a stain
- Act quickly: a fresh stain comes out much more easily.
- Dab with a clean, damp cloth, without rubbing hard.
- Add a little mild soap if needed, then rinse with a second damp cloth.
- Let it dry flat or hanging, in the open air and in the shade.
Avoid harsh products such as bleach or strong stain removers, which can damage the colours of the illustration.
The beach tote: sand, salt and sunscreen
The beach bag takes the most punishment. A few habits:
- shake the bag out as you leave the beach, before putting it in the car;
- keep sunscreen in a closed pouch so it does not leak;
- once home, wipe the inside with a damp cloth to remove salt;
- let it dry open, in the shade.

The insulated bag: hygiene and smells
An insulated bag carries food, so it deserves regular care.
- Empty it as soon as you get home, ice packs included.
- Wipe the inside with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then with a clean cloth.
- Mop up straight away any spilled drink or leaking food.
- Let it dry wide open before closing it: that is the best way to avoid smells.
- Never store it closed and damp.

The lunch bag: everyday care
A lunch bag is used every day: get into the habit of emptying and wiping it every evening, and leaving it open overnight. More tips in our insulated lunch bag guide.
Protecting the colours of the illustration
Our bags are illustrated with colourful designs. To keep them looking good:
- avoid leaving the bag in full sun for hours when it is not in use;
- dry it in the shade, never in direct sunlight;
- avoid repeated rubbing against rough surfaces such as rock or concrete;
- clean stains by hand, without a hard brush.
Storing your bags
- Fold or roll your totes and store them somewhere dry.
- Keep one in the car, out of direct sun if possible.
- Do not store heavy objects in a stored bag, to avoid stretching it out of shape.
When the bag is really worn
A reusable bag is meant to last. When it is too worn for shopping, it can still be used to store laundry, toys or beach gear. Extending its life is at the heart of zero waste.
Our classic totes are in the Classic bags range, if you would like to add one to your collection.
